We’ve heard many cases of people going blind due to excessive phone use, but this is the first time we’ve heard that someone has gone colourblind because of it!
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to this 16-year-old girl!
In what seems to be the first case of its kind, the teenager from Kaohsiung, Taipei was recently diagnosed with colourblindness after excessive use of her phone during her summer vacation.
According to Dr. Hung Chi-ting, the girl - surnamed Liu, suffered damages to some cells in her eyes because of the continuous blue light exposure which led her to develop “red-green colour blindness.”
"It's the first case in the world," the doctor said to the Liberty Times.
Fortunately for Liu, she began her medical treatment at an early phase and has since completely recovered from her condition.
According to reports, the teenager had spent more than 10 hours a day on her phone and mostly used her phone in the dark.
When Liu noticed that she couldn’t distinguish between the colours of a traffic light, she realised that she had a problem, especially when she almost caused an accident while crossing the street!
"I didn't know the light was red. A relative, who pulled me back when I intended to cross the street, asked me why I was recklessly crossing the street at a red light," Liu said.
Not only was she not able to tell colours apart, Liu began to gradually lose her ability to see in the dark.
While the 16-year-old may have fully recovered from this condition, Dr. Hung recommends that phone users should spend less than five hours a day on their phones, and to also take 10-minute breaks every 30 minutes.
This is definitely a first!
Now that you know that excessive phone usage can also cause colourblindness, share this with someone who spends way too much time on their phones! It could save their eyesight!
