In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, many countries have been using creative methods to make sure people stick by the rules, but perhaps none are as “deadly” as the one in Jakarta, Indonesia!
Authorities in Jakarta have reportedly come up with an interesting punishment for face mask violators by making them lie in an empty coffin.
People caught not wearing a face mask have to count up to 100 to “contemplate their actions” in the coffin that's on display as they are shunned by passers-by who are taking pictures of them.
“With Covid-19 there is a risk of them being laid inside a real coffin,” said the head of East Jakarta Public Order Agency, Budhy Novian.
"We want everyone to realise that wearing a mask is a must because if they violate the basic protocols, they could be infected and die in the very worst-case scenario," he continued.
The punishment method went viral online and Budhy said that the officers who imposed the fake coffin sanction have been reprimanded and were urged to punish the violators according to the current regulations instead.
The violators reportedly “volunteered to lie down in the coffin” because “they said they didn’t have the time to carry out the social work or enough money to pay the fines,” said the deputy Pasar Rebo district head, Santoso.
“We don’t impose any punishment other than those stipulated in the gubernatorial regulation,” Jakarta Satpol PP head Arifin said, explaining that fines and community service punishments were still carried out even after they laid in the coffin.
The punishment method has drawn criticism online after it went viral, although many netizens think the punishment is fitting for the violators.
Quarantine violators in Pampanga were previously reported to be forced to plant vegetables as punishment, and India punished some tourists to write “I am sorry” 500 times for breaking lockdown rules.
