The supply for face masks was in shortage in many countries this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and one father selflessly saved two packets of face masks for his daughter in secret.
A post recently went viral on Facebook with the story of how a Taiwanese father left his daughter with two packets of face masks after he passed away from cancer.
The daughter said that her father was hospitalised after his cancer had reached the terminal stage when the pandemic hit its worst in the nation and there was a shortage of face masks everywhere.
The hospital was distributing face masks to her father at the hospital daily and knowing that there was a mask shortage, he decided to secretly save them for his daughter.
“My father left these face masks behind for me. He was treated in the hospital for the final stage of esophageal cancer and the hospital limited one family member to visit every Saturday,” she wrote.
“He would keep wearing his face mask if it’s not dirty and secretly save the face mask distributed by the hospital daily. The last time I saw him, he gave these two packets of face masks to me.”
She revealed that she was unable to be with him in his final moments and the face masks with her name on it was the last gift that her father gave her.
“On the 3rd of July, my father passed away. I didn’t use a single mask he gave me. I couldn’t bear to use them, I really couldn’t… all I could do is leave it like this, watching it, keeping it.”
Many netizen were touched by how selfless her father was and offered their condolences, with some sharing their own experiences with items left behind by their late parent.
"I can't bear to use the heat pack my mother gave me seven years ago too,” one user said while another said, “keep it… I still have my mother’s clothes and would hug them when I miss her. It’s like she’s still here,”
Her father’s action definitely touched us and made us realise how we should never take what we have for granted and should be grateful for the people around us!
