After a whole decade of production, Game of Thrones is coming to an end with season eight.
As we all know, we have author, George R.R. Martin, and his A Song of Ice and Fire book series to thank for creating the world of Westeros.
Game of Thrones first started production based on the classic novels. However, at this time, the two final books of the series – The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring - have yet to be published. So no one, except George knows the real ending of the book series.
Because of this, fans - who are avid readers of the books, are worried that the upcoming final episodes of GoT will spoil the books for them.
Fans need not worry though as the author has revealed that the ending of the books will be different from the one in the series.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said, “I’ve been so slow with these books. They major points of the ending will be things I told them five or six years ago. But there may also be changes, and there’ll be a lot added.”
Because the end of the books has yet to be revealed, the showrunners of Game of Thrones have had their own challenges in creating a satisfying conclusion.
D. B. Weiss, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the opportunity they’ve had in bringing the world and story of Westeros to life.
“If you’re going to spend 10 years working on one show, you better really love the people you work with, because you’re spending a load of time away from your family and friends,” he said. “You always put everything into it. So to spend time on a show that people respond to all over the world, it’s incredibly gratifying.”
“You have these characters you love and you can come up with ideas for them,” he continued. “And a few months later these incredible actors will be saying those things. That’s such a rare gift.”
While many fans are upset about Game of Thrones coming to an end, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jamie Lannister, fully supports the showrunners’ decision.
“That D. B. Weiss and David Benioff stuck to their guns and said, ‘This is the story we wanna tell; we’re not gonna extend this’ – because I’m sure HBO would have loved another couple years of this show. There’s an audience for it, for sure,” Nikolaj said. “But I think everyone who watches the show will appreciate that it’s finished – that it was one story from episode one to episode 83, and we told it.”
While we appreciate the dedication the showrunners, cast and crew have put into the world of Game of Thrones, we’re definitely sad that it’s coming to an end.
