Gracie Abrams is reflecting on the unforgettable experience of touring with Taylor Swift on the final night of the Eras Tour.
The 25-year-old singer, who opened for Swift at 49 shows, including the final stop in Vancouver on December 8, described the atmosphere on the last night as emotionally charged. "Everyone had been crying all day. It felt like the last day of school backstage," Abrams recalled in an interview with Nylon. "Everyone was walking around with their Eras Tour books, signing each other's books. We were all walking around with Sharpies."
Touring alongside Swift for nearly two years brought the two pop stars, along with the entire crew, closer than ever. "I’m feeling emotional and grateful and in a state of shock that we don’t, as a global community, get to experience that source of light anymore," Abrams said, expressing how special the journey had been.
Abrams also spoke about how much she learned from Swift, calling it an invaluable experience. "I’ve basically been studying [her show] for a year and a half," Abrams explained. "Every time I’ve opened for her, I watch and learn. I learned from her every time we have a conversation about the weather, even." Abrams went on to mention that she kept up with Swift's performances, even watching live streams of shows she couldn’t attend.
Touring with Swift significantly impacted Abrams' career. Starting with the release of her debut album Good Riddance and later gaining even more recognition after the release of her single "That’s So True" in October, Abrams' career skyrocketed during the tour. "It’s funny to see what one song can do for engagement," Abrams said. "It was really wild. It felt different, for sure. There is something really psychotic about being able to hear voices in the stadium singing s--- back at you. It’s like, ‘What the f---?’"
A highlight of the final leg of the tour came when Swift invited Abrams on stage for a surprise mashup of Swift’s 1989 track "Out of the Woods" and their collaboration "Us" from Abrams’ The Secret of Us album at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on November 16.
In a previous interview, Abrams had shared what it was like to debut "Us" with Swift at Wembley Stadium in London. "To see somebody have the ability to, in a stadium, make it feel like you and her are the only two people there, that was hugely important for me to see," Abrams said.
Looking ahead, Gracie Abrams is set to bring all the knowledge and experience she gained from the Eras Tour to her own upcoming North American tour, which will kick off in July 2025.
