If you’ve ever travelled with your little furry family member, you know it is never an easy task.
Whether that is by your own vehicle or on a public transportation, the furkids may get nervous or even too excited to sit still in their carriers in such a ‘shaky’ environment.

However, it is not impossible and Japan Railways (JR) is committed to be part of the improvement for pets and their owners during travel.
Ongoing trials involving a special pet-friendly carriage in the Shinkansen or bullet train, will be a great update for every traveller and their furry buddy.

The special test run on May 21st allowed dogs and their owners to take a one-hour trip from Tokyo’s Ueno station to the town of Karuizawa, a mountainous area north-west of Tokyo. This group of pups is the first to be allowed to roam freely in a bullet train carriage, with all the seats covered in plastic so it wouldn’t be accidentally get soiled or damaged by the dogs.
Passenger Yoko Okubo who brought her Corgi for the ride said, “He has to stay in a carrier all the time when travelling but today we don’t need to do that and can see his face. We can travel more comfortably this way.”

Another passenger, Yukari Seino travelled with her Chihuahua and said “we travel a lot together, but in the past I’ve felt bad about keeping my dog in a cage. We feel no stress today and it’s really fun.”
The pet-friendly carriage trial was launched after customers voiced out their desire to travel with pets in a more relaxed manner. JR takes these demands to heart and is organizing more pet-friendly rides in the future.
