HBO has officially confirmed the first round of casting for its upcoming Harry Potter television series, with some fresh faces taking on iconic roles. Paapa Essiedu will portray Severus Snape, Janet McTeer will play Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost will bring the beloved half-giant Hagrid to life.
Joining them is comedian Paul Whitehouse as Hogwarts’ cranky caretaker Argus Filch, while award-winning actor John Lithgow is set to take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, as previously announced in February.
Filming is expected to begin this summer, with the series potentially airing in 2026. The roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione have yet to be cast, but HBO’s open casting call reportedly attracted over 30,000 hopefuls.
Other confirmed cast members include Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell.
Producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod shared their excitement about the project, calling the cast “extraordinary” and promising a faithful, in-depth adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books.
While the original films covered the story over eight movies, the series will allow for a more detailed retelling, diving deeper into the characters and plots.
More casting announcements are expected soon, with rumors swirling about Cillian Murphy potentially playing Voldemort.
