We woke up to sad news today as one of the world’s most iconic buildings caught fire last night.

At approximately 6.30pm in Paris, France, a fire broke out at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame that destroyed its spire and severely damaged its roof.

The devastating fire is said to have begun in the attic of the 850-year-old UNESCO world heritage landmark. The cathedral’s rector, Msgr. Patrick Cahuvet noted that the fire appeared to have “started in an interior network of wooden beams, many dating back to the Middle Ages and nicknamed ‘the forest’,” The New York Times reports.

Fortunately, no lives were lost but a firefighter was seriously injured in the incident. The doors to Notre Dame had just been shut to the public when witnesses noticed smoke rising from the spire.

An estimated 500 firefighters were deployed to the historic building where they battled to control the fire for almost five hours. The blaze was said to be potentially linked to the $6.8 million (RM27.9 million) renovation that the cathedral was currently undergoing.

Paris fire chief, Jean-Claude Gallet, said that the structure, including its two frontal towers, had been “saved and preserved as a whole,” but two-thirds of the roof had been destroyed.

French President, Emmanuel Macron noted, “We will rebuild. The worst has been avoided even though the battle is not completely won.” The president added that a national funding campaign would be launched to help rebuild the beloved cathedral.
