Introducing “Chinning”, The New Instagram Fad

Let all the chins hang loose!

Posing for a selfie can be tedious and embarrassing, particularly when you’re in public, and you’ve snapped at least 35 shots and none of them seem to be good enough.

While there’s no shame in taking a memorable photo where you look fabulous, sometimes it would be nice if we didn’t have to live up to the internet expectation of looking exceptional 24/7.

Enter “chinning”, the new Instagram trend that will hopefully relieve us of that unrealistic pressure to look perfect in every selfie.

“Chinning” was proudly kickstarted by Michelle Liu to clap back against the standards of Instagram “perfection” that are constantly littering our newsfeeds.

As the name implies, “chinning” is basically the act of posing with as many intentional double-chins as possible.

Water you doin this fine evening? 🌊

Michelle started the trend when she was documenting her world travels, and eventually created an entire Instagram account devoted to the act of “chinning”. As of today, the account has over 8,000 followers.

Michelle has been perfecting the pose for years prior to her Instagram fame. “My chinning entertained my friends all through middle school, high school and college, at which point I decided to share my chin with the world,” she told Mic in an email.

Fun fact: Apparently my great-uncle was one of Chairman Mao's personal guards 😮

Michelle says that she feels there’s benefit to “looking silly” and intentionally posing in ridiculous ways. Apparently, she always felt pressured to “look a certain way” during her adolescent years, so “chinning” is just her way of subverting expectations and sticking it to the concept of looking “picture perfect”.

And, as it turns out, the whole chinning phenomenon has actually taken off on Instagram!

Michelle says she can’t be more pleased with the fact that people are latching on to the idea. “I want to be chinsta-famous.”.
