Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly bending workplace rules, with many engaging in behaviors like taking naps, “quiet vacationing,” or leaving early. A survey by Papers Owl revealed 95% of young workers admit to such rule-bending. Common tactics include clocking out early (34%), calling in sick (11%), and using AI to complete tasks (14%).

While these actions are often labeled as laziness, the survey found that burnout and limited paid time off are key reasons behind them. “Coffee badging,” where employees swipe in at the office but leave to work elsewhere, is another popular tactic.
These trends reflect a desire for more flexibility, better work-life balance, and fewer office distractions. To address this, experts suggest creating supportive work environments, offering fair pay, and recognizing employees' efforts. Companies can also reduce cheating by implementing clear policies, conducting audits, and fostering open communication.
In the end, fostering a healthy, flexible workplace could help minimize these behaviors and improve overall productivity.
