Bubble tea is definitely one of our guilty pleasures but if brown sugar milk tea is your favourite, we’ve got some bad news for you!
A recent research by Singapore’s Mount Alvernia Hospital revealed that brown sugar milk tea with pearls is the unhealthiest among all the bubble tea drinks, with up to 18.5 teaspoon of sugar for every 500ml!
Seeing as how our average healthy sugar intake on a daily basis is 8-11 teaspoons for adults and 5 for children and teenagers, 18.5 is fairly high!
And if you’re a fan of milk foam, it’s also ranked for having the highest amount of calories!
Now you’re probably not going to stop drinking bubble tea after reading this, but the hospital did give some advice on your bubble tea intake:
- AVOID Brown Sugar Milk Tea
- Reduce your intake to two cups of bubble tea a week
- Choose “plain” green tea, oolong or black tea
- Limit your sugar level to 30% or below
- Request for low-fat or skimmed milk
- Avoid toppings and go for aloe vera and white pearls
So if you’re a bubble tea fan, maybe avoid drinking brown sugar milk tea and milk foam topping!
