Getting an internship these days is not easy and getting an internship where you get paid for your work seems even more impossible to some. That however, is about to change - at least in the government and ministry sectors.

According to Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, the Cabinet has agreed to reintroduce and make it compulsory for interns who undergo industrial training with the government to be given an allowance.
Previously, the youth minister noted that university and college students are unable to afford undergoing unpaid internships in commercial firms and industries and reiterated the need for these interns to be given an allowance.

The official implementation of paid internships under government sectors was announced via a statement that was released by Syed Saddiq on his social media platforms.
“Based on the decision made by the Cabinet during the Cabinet meeting today, the government will be introducing a compulsory allowance payment to interns. The obligation to pay this allowance will refer to a circular that will be implemented in all ministries and government agencies,” the statement read.
The youth minister also noted that the payment scheme for interns will be assessed based on a set of criteria that will be implemented for the convenience of the interns.
Syed Saddiq hopes that with this implementation, paid internships will become a “standard” procedure across all private and public sectors.
The statement also notes that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has also agreed to hold a special Cabinet session in which youth-related issues will be discussed.
The decision to make paid internships compulsory has been met with much praise by many students and trainees who see this as a move in the right direction.
