Could an Oscar-winning actress step into the role of Lucius Malfoy? According to Jason Isaacs, the answer is yes.

The British actor, known for portraying the cunning Slytherin patriarch across six Harry Potter films, recently shared his pick for the role in HBO’s upcoming TV adaptation. When asked by Variety who he thought should succeed him as Lucius Malfoy, Isaacs had an unexpected but intriguing answer: Meryl Streep.
“She can do anything, that woman,” Isaacs said. “There’s literally no limit to what she can do.”
While Streep may be best known for roles in The Devil Wears Prada and The Iron Lady, her ability to command the screen with icy authority certainly makes her a fascinating—albeit unconventional—choice.

HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series aims to be a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, with each season dedicated to a single novel. So far, the only confirmed casting is John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. While rumors swirl about who will play the iconic characters, Isaacs made it clear that the new cast won’t need his input.
“I wouldn’t have any advice at all,” he said. “I know some of the people they’re casting already, and they’re brilliant actors. It’s going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me.”
Though the Harry Potter films became a global phenomenon, Isaacs revealed that making them wasn’t always as magical as fans might think.
“They weren’t that much fun to make,” he admitted on BBC’s The One Show. “It’s quite boring making big special effects films; however, the pleasure all comes afterward. I meet people for whom their lives were changed by it. Some say their lives were saved by it, and I believe it.”
With Harry Potter remaining one of the most influential franchises in pop culture, HBO’s reboot is expected to reignite the magic for a new generation.
Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) will serve as showrunner, with Game of Thrones and Succession director Mark Mylod helming multiple episodes. Meanwhile, Rowling remains an executive producer, despite ongoing controversy surrounding her views on transgender issues.
As casting announcements continue, fans will have to wait and see who ultimately wields Lucius Malfoy’s wand. But if Isaacs had his way, it might just be an unexpected legend of Hollywood.
