“It is extremely hard to cry on a virtual shoulder” – Dunbar

We’re emotional people. Whether we care to admit it, we thrive on connection and find happiness in the bonds we build.

But A British Man Says…

Based on British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, there’s a limit to the number of relationships we can foster (wow).

In this digital age where we know millions of people (okay hundreds of people), a set number doesn’t make sense.

But Dunbar’s findings are that the size of the neocortex (part of brain associated with cognition and language), in relation to one’s body, is linked to the size of one’s social group.

We’ll dumb it down—it means the ratio between the size of part of your brain, your body and your number of besties are connected.

So How Many?

According to the study, each of us only have 150 legit attachments. This is the breakdown:

  • 5 loved ones (inner circle/boos/squad/ride or die)
  • 15 good friends (girlfriends/besties/bros)
  • 50 friends
  • 150 meaningful contacts
  • 500 acquaintances
  • 1,500 people you recognize

Family > Everything Else

The numbers are abit ‘??’, but realistically speaking, how lucky are we if we can actually look around a room and say we like at least 15 people.

These connections are important whether they’re from family, friends, or boothangs. Nothing slaps quite right than reuniting and reconnecting over activities, coffee or even comfort food like KFC.
