Laufey’s talent has been undeniable from a young age—but even she was taken aback when legendary actor Bill Murray recognized it early on.
In a recent interview with The Independent, the 25-year-old Grammy-winning jazz-pop artist reflected on an unexpected compliment she received from Murray, now 74, when she was just 17. “He told me I was a ‘powerful woman,’” Laufey recalled. While she appreciated the kind words, she admitted, “I remember also being confused. I hadn’t put out any music then. I was just a nerdy little classical cello student.”
At that time, Laufey was already making waves, having been a finalist on Iceland’s Got Talent and a semi-finalist on The Voice Iceland. Fast forward a few years, and Laufey is now a Berklee College of Music graduate with two acclaimed albums to her name: Everything I Know About Love (2022) and Bewitched (2023), the latter winning Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.
In a delightful twist of fate, Murray recently joined Laufey’s artistic journey, appearing as the narrator in the music video for her rendition of the holiday classic “Santa Baby.” The video, released last month, features Laufey in glamorous holiday vignettes, playfully flipping off Santa and detailing her wish list to the man in red himself.
Directed by Jason Lester and choreographed by Alex Wong, the video also stars American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Isabella Boylston alongside Murray. Laufey expressed her excitement about the project, saying, “It was so much fun creating this version, and the music video became the perfect visual representation of the track. We were so lucky to have Bill Murray and Isabella Boylston featured in this fun and festive story.”
“Santa Baby” is the latest addition to Laufey’s holiday EP, A Very Laufey Holiday, originally released in 2022. With her talent and growing accolades, it seems Laufey is living up to Murray’s early observation—powerful, indeed.
