Former national badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei took it to social media to voice out his dismay at the online abuse faced by the national players at the Olympics.
“I’ve been dismayed by the numbers of online comments abusing our badminton players when they lost. As a former teammate, I felt so much for them,” he wrote in his caption.
“All I want to say is I know these players. They went to court with only one aim, one goal. To win the game for the flag on the chest, to make us proud.”

He continued by saying that no athletes want to lose and every match is bound to have a winner and a loser and that “sometimes it’s just not your day”.
“Yang layan depan TV pun dah heart attack and kecewa, apalah lagi pemain dalam gelanggang? Shouldn’t we support them on?”
“No one wants to go in court and lose. These players brought you joy before. Don’t mock and desert them when they lost a game.”
The mixed doubles players also took it to social media to apologise after their lost, with Peng Soon saying sorry to the supporters and that all their hard work has been dedicated to the Olympics while Liu Ying apologised not only to her supporters, but more importantly to herself for entering the match with injuries.
Fans who watched her Instagram stories can see that Liu Ying was treated with acupuncture after her previous match’s injury and was injured again on her knees in the match with Germany.
The mixed doubles pair will return for one more match in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics against China on 26 July.
