Veteran actress Lee Joo-Sil, best known for her role as Park Mal Soon in the second season of Squid Game, has passed away at the age of 81, just months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Lee's death was confirmed by her talent agency, 1230Culture, on February 2, following a cardiac arrest at her home in Uijeongbu. She was immediately transported to St. Mary's Hospital, where she later died. Her diagnosis had come three months earlier.
This diagnosis came over three decades after Lee had been given only a year to live after being diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 1993. She bravely fought the disease for over 13 years, undergoing chemotherapy, and was eventually declared cancer-free.

Reflecting on her cancer battle, Lee shared in 2023, "I found out at the end of stage 3 and it soon became stage 4. I overcame it well because I have children. Everyone becomes stronger when faced with a crisis."
A respected figure in Korean entertainment, Lee's career spanned decades, beginning in theater in 1965. She also appeared in notable films such as Train to Busan (2016) and Roaring Currents (2014), as well as TV series including The Uncanny Counter and It's Beautiful Now. In 2010, she earned a degree in public health from Wonkwang University, further showcasing her resilience.
Lee's passing marks a sad moment for fans and the Squid Game cast, who remember her for her talent and determination throughout her career.
