Nearly five months after Liam Payne’s untimely passing, his former fiancée Maya Henry has spoken out about their relationship and the struggles the One Direction singer faced.
In a statement to Rolling Stone published on February 11, Maya reflected on their turbulent romance, which lasted from 2018 to 2022, and the toll his addiction took on their bond.
“While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up,” Maya shared. “On drugs, he became someone unrecognizable—so different from his sober self.”
She recalled holding onto hope that each incident would push Liam toward recovery, but it never did. “I tried to be there for him. I loved him so much that I convinced myself I could fix things,” she admitted.
The 25-year-old also opened up about their final breakup in 2022, revealing that despite standing by him in his darkest moments, his addiction ultimately drove them apart.
“Anyone who has been with an addict understands how difficult that is,” she explained. “The love I gave, the sacrifices I made—they weren’t enough, because they never could be.”
Maya added that after their split, she felt “emptiness” and a deep sense of loss. But in the end, she had to walk away for her own well-being.
“It wasn’t about me or anything I did. It was about struggles beyond my control,” she said. “And in the end, I had to choose myself. Staying in his world meant losing myself.”
Liam passed away on October 16 after falling 40 feet from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Maya is the latest to share her grief over Liam’s passing. Earlier this month, his last known girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, also spoke out, revealing how deeply she’s been affected.
“I think about Liam every second of every day,” Kate told The Sun. “It still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here.”
As those closest to Liam continue to mourn, his legacy as a musician, father, and friend lives on.
