An elephant named Kaavan that’s dubbed as the “world’s loneliest elephant” has been getting support from animal activists around the world to get a new lease on life for years and he’s finally getting rescued!

After years of living in a zoo under unsafe conditions and in an improper enclosure that resulted in Kavaan being overweight and malnourished, the elephant has been given medical approval to travel, most likely to an elephant sanctuary in Cambodia.

“Following the checks, which confirmed Kaavan is strong enough, steps will now be taken to finalise his relocation,” said animal welfare group, Four Paws in a statement.

Living in the run-down zoo for years left Kavaan with cracked and overgrown nails, and he also developed behavioural issues “where he swooshes his head and trunk from side to side for hours.”

“A lack of physical and behavioural enrichments, as well as the absence of a partner, have resulted in Kaavan becoming incredibly bored,” said Frank Göritz, head veterinarian at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin.

Kavaan was gifted by Sri Lanka to Pakistan in 1985 and lived together with his partner Saheli from 1990 until she died in 2012 in the Marghazar Zoo, and he's been living in solitary since.

Four Paws also said that two lions died during an attempted transfer back in July after local animal handlers set a fire in their enclosure to force them into their transport crates.

The journey to Kavaan’s recovery might be long but thankfully he’s finally healthy enough to be relocated and he'll finally meet other elephants after living alone for so long. Get well soon, Kavaan!
