The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is taking place in July this year and Malaysia is already aiming for gold… in serving halal food at the global sports event!
Malaysia is the only country that has a halal cooperation deal at the Tokyo Olympics with a factory preparing ready-to-eat halal meals from chicken biryani to fried rice ready to be shipped to Tokyo!
“It’s a huge platform and opportunity for us,” said the boss of the company making the food. “Our intention is not to go in and out. We’ve to go in and stay for the long term.”
The number of Muslim tourists visiting Japan has increased over the years and with over 50 Muslim countries competing in the Olympics, Malaysia is aiming to use the opportunity to boost halal exports and targets to sell US$300 million worth of halal food and products to Muslims and non-Muslims.
The government has also secured a “Malaysia Street 2020” promotion on the sidelines to allow companies to meet Japanese buyers and distributors by selling their food.
“We have a lot to learn from Malaysian authorities and in return, Malaysian companies have more chances to expand their business,” said Hideto Nakajima, economic counselor at the Japanese embassy in Malaysia.
It definitely makes us feel proud for being the only country to serve halal food at the Tokyo Olympics that’s happening from 24 July to 9 August and hope that more people will get to taste our delicious Malaysian food!
Go Malaysia!
