Some of us might have the passion to take up certain subjects in high school but couldn’t because we were sorted into different streams. But all that is about to change!
Deputy Minister of Education, Teo Nie Ching just announced that form 4 students will not be separated into science and art streams starting 2020 and will instead have the option to choose the subjects they are interested in instead!

“Students can pick the subjects based on their interest and passion, Then they will be arranged into different classes based on the subjects they have chosen,” said the Deputy Minister of Education.
She added that school counselors play an important role in helping students make the right choices. Students' classroom assessments and PT3 scores can also be used as a reference indicator.

The current subjects for form 4 students are English, Malay, history, moral, mathematics, and advanced mathematics; science subjects include chemistry, biology, and physics; and business subjects are science, accounting, and economics.
Education Minister Maszlee previously revealed the plan to merge science and art streams saying, “we will not only emphasise Science, but also Arts (and culture) because knowledge is one; it cannot be compartmentalised and should be integrated instead.”

He added that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is the way forward and a way of life.
“STEM education will be updated to become STREAM, including the vital components of Arts and Reading.”
“We will also shift the priorities of teachers and lecturers nationally to focus on teaching STEM in a fun and experiential way, thereby making STEM accessible to all.”
