The Human Resource Ministry shocked the public on Friday when they announced that they are looking to establish a new regulation that only allows locals to be recruited as cooks in restaurants.

The proposed regulation will be implemented on 1 January 2019, but the government wants to start urging restaurants to begin recruiting local staff by 1 July. Restaurants currently employing foreign cooks will be given until December 2018 to find replacements.

Local restaurants currently depend on foreign workers for hire and this move is to curb that dependency as well as to ensure the quality of our local food.
The ministry was inspired by the decision made by Penang’s government to ban foreign cooks at local hawker centres and stalls to protect the authenticity and heritage of our local cuisine.

Currently, the government said that they are merely suggesting the ban and that the ban will only be applied to “ordinary local food” outlets, not to restaurants serving foreign food, high-end restaurants, or five-star hotels that require specialised cooks.
