Everyone should know the dangers of plastic straws by now and while the alternative metal straw might be a hassle for some to wash and the paper straws don’t last long in drinks, this Malaysian company came up edible straws!
A Malaysian company called Ricestraws created environmentally friendly straw that can not only last two to five hours in hot drinks and five to 10 in cold drinks… it’s also edible!
The edible straws are made out of rice and tapioca and it’s tasteless, so it won’t affect the flavor of your drink.
Ricestraws IT director Andrew Loh said that “the bottom part when immersed in drinks will taste a bit starchy while the upper section will be crispy like chips.”
“The straws, made from natural ingredients, do not contain any additives and will decompose completely in 90 days and can also be turned into animal feed or fertiliser.”
He added, “when we use paper straws, we are actually cutting down more trees” and that they “use broken rice which people hardly eat. They are usually used to make bee hoon (noodles).”
Now if you’re wondering if you can drink your bubble tea with these straws, Ricestraws actually created three different sizes so worry not!
“Since the state government started the no single-use plastic green initiative last year, the company was keen on creating edible straws,” said Andrew.
“We are planning to produce cups, bowls, stirrers and cutlery made of rice and tapioca too in the future.”
We certainly can’t wait to see these straws being used in Malaysia and other countries in the future!
Do you know someone that still uses plastic straws? Share this with them!
