Malaysian Fathil Astri proved that hard work and persistence pay, when he won first place at the Istanbul Photo Awards 2018 in the ‘Single Nature & Environment’ category. Talking about his recent win, Fathil said that he didn't expect his photo to win first prize out of 37,000 photo submissions.
Fathil's photo portrayed the state of an old bus station in Rantau Panjang, the highest point in town, during the flood on 4 January 2017.
The 44-year-old photog told Berita Harian that the victory was the third international win he’s had. Previously, Fathil also picked up a gold medal in the WAN-IFRA Contest, and silver at the China International Press Photo Awards in 2009.
He explained that he was only trying his luck when he submitted the photo for the competition. Besides the Istanbul Photo Awards, he has also submitted entries to the World Press Photo and Sony Photo Awards. Without fail, Fathil submits his photographs to several competitions every year, be it local or international ones.
The Istanbul Photo Awards is an annual international photography competition organised by Anadolu Agency. The competition has been receiving about 37,000 photos every year since 2015 from 125 different countries.
