Malaysia is not shy of amazing talents and singer Cheryl K who previously went international in Crazy Rich Asians, went for her audition on American Idol!
The 24-year-old Malaysian singer-songwriter auditioned on American Idol and even had a duet with Lionel Richie!
Being a fan of Lionel Richie, Cheryl sang the song Endless Love and performed a duet with Lionel Richie with the other two judges, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan enjoying the show.
Lionel Richie also shared a clip of the audition on Twitter saying, "you brought tears and wonderful memories to my eyes today.”
“Glad to have met you and Jimmy Choo today,” he said to Cheryl and her dog that she had brought along to the audition.
Unfortunately, she didn’t get her golden ticket to the next round, but she did get her vinyl of Lionel’s 1981 Endless Love with Diana Ross signed.
“Of course, I wish I got the golden ticket, but it’s okay,” she said tearfully. “I’m so proud of myself for being daring enough to try it.”
“And I’m grateful that I got to sing with Lionel Richie. He signed my vinyl, and my mom would be so proud.”
Many people on the internet expressed how wonderful her performance was in her audition, with many disatisfied that she wasn’t chosen and stating that she was better than some of the contestants that got through to the next round.
Others thought that she should’ve been given another chance to perform on her own instead of a duet for her to truly shine by singing in her tune.
Cheryl K started singing at the age of eight and even represented Malaysia in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood and won four Gold medals including a Hollywood Industry Award and Champion of the World Senior Division Awards back in 2010.
She has performed alongside many artists like David Foster, Eric Benet, Ruben Studdard, Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Jaclyn Victor, and Vince Chong in the past and she made her most notable singing debut with her version of Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)" in both English and Mandarin in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians.
We believe in you, Cheryl K and wish to see more of you in the future! You can check out her YouTube channel here.
