The world was both enraged and heartbroken after news that a pregnant elephant that died after eating a firecracker-filled pineapple, and justice is finally here.

While the fruit that killed the elephant was in fact a coconut laced with explosives and not a pineapple, the fact remains the same when it comes to animal cruelty and after investigations, the police have arrested the man responsible for it.

The arrested man, P. Wilson is a plantation worker that’s responsible for placing the fruits filled with explosives to keep animals away from his plantation, mainly wild boars.

“The man has admitted that they used the explosive-filled coconuts to target the wild animals,” said Kerala’s chief wildlife warden, Surendra Kumar.

The rubber tapper and overseer in his forties was reportedly taken to the plantation to gather evidence.

The police is still hunting down two of his other associates that made the “coconut bombs” and placed them around the plantation.

The pregnant elephant had consumed the fruit that exploded in her mouth, causing severe injuries that left her unable to eat or drink, and died standing still in a river two days later.

People around the world have been demanding for justice after the news broke, with many artists paying tribute to the mother elephant and its unborn baby.

This is however not the first time an incident like this was reported, with a similar case taking place in the Kerala district where another female elephant died after serious mouth injuries from fruits filled with fire crackers.

Elephants are protected under the Indian wildlife laws and if the suspects are convicted, could face up to seven years of jail time.

Hopefully the incident will bring light to the wildlife in the world and make us protect them better in the future.

Rest in peace, mama and baby elephant.
