There are many home remedies out there and though some may work, others can be dangerous and sometimes even… fatal.

A 51-year-old man nearly lost his life after he blindly followed a folk remedy, which claims that eating live eels could help an individual pass solid waste.
According to reports, the construction worker in China swallowed two live eels to treat his constipation but the creatures that were described as “very thick” by medics, tore through his intestines and left in critical condition.

The medical case that was revealed by Jiangsu Public Channel, shared that the unnamed patient was rushed to the emergency room of a hospital in Nanjing by his colleagues after feeling pain.
The migrant worker who lived in the city on his own, was in great agony and told the medics that he had swallowed two live eels about 24 hours beforehand.
The doctors were in shock to find a life-threatening bacterial infection and that the man’s colon had ruptured. He then had to undergo emergency surgery.
The man’s x-ray showed two eels lodged in two sides of his abdomen.
Dr Sun Haijian, a deputy director at the Jiangsu Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, shared that the surgeons found two “very thick” eels outside of his intestines in the lower part of his abdomen.

The surgeons also found a two-centimetre-wide hole on the man’s sigmoid colon.
“Because the eels were alive while being swallowed… A person’s intestines are fragile, therefore they will be ruptured as soon as [the eels] bite them,” Dr Sun shared.
After the surgery, the 51-year-old was observed in the Intensive Care Unit and has since been discharged.
