Sometimes the more you spend time with someone, the more you get frustrated at little things, and a high number of divorce cases were contributed by the Movement Control Order (MCO).

It’s been almost a year since MCO was first implemented in Malaysia and many factors that happened while couples are staying at home contributed to their divorce.

From trivial things like wife cooking too slow, husband not taking a shower to kids always getting hungry, one of the biggest contributor that contributed to MCO divorces is social media exposure.

Spending too much time on social media lead to the deterioration of understanding between some couples.

But no matter how trivial the problem is, financial problems remains as the main reason behind the divorce.

As society had yet to adapt to the new normal during the beginning of MCO, many thought staying at home might promote the relationship between a husband and wife.

But as we entered the fourth and fifth week, many families started facing financial problems, and it caused friction in many trivial matters that lead to the pattern of a divorce.

Reports say that divorce cases in the Islamic court had an upward pattern during the first MCO from June to September last year and the number of divorce cases have increased by 50% since MCO 2.0 in January and February, reaching 231 cases.

1,981 divorce cases in the Islamic court were registered last year out of the total 4,058 cases, with 287 recorded in January and February this year; with five to 10 cases a day.

40% of the total divorces were among the B40 category, and professionals, civil servants and private sector employees aged between 21 to 40 accounted for 30%.

The main reason behind the divorce cases is contributed by income or unemployment, and might likely this will continue to rise if the economy doesn’t get better from MCO.
