Some of us might get bored of our car's colour after some time and while it’s tempting to give your car a different look, you might want to change your car’s paint the right - and legal - way!
With recent operations and fines imposed on individuals who illegally modify their vehicles, it’s important to note that changing the colour on your car without authorisation is actually an offence.
While the vehicle ownership certificate does not list down a car’s colour, it is still an offence to not report the modification of your car’s colour to the road transport department (JPJ).
According to Section (12) APJ 1987, every car owner that changes the colour of their vehicle will be given a “Notis Arah Periksa” or PG1 and car owner will then have report the change of the car’s colour to JPJ. This notice is not a fine for changing the colour of the car.
Failure to report the modification will result in a fine if caught and if your car is captured on camera for another offence.
While it is an offence, changing a car’s colour without reporting it might also result in problems when it comes to insurance claims.
“If a car gets into an accident, and the insurance company finds out that the car’s colour is different from the original colour, there’s a big possibility that it won’t bear the costs involved,” Mat Dalib told paultan.org.
So if you want to change the colour of your car but don’t know how to, fret not because JPJ recently posted a step by step guide on how to do so!
VEHICLE PAINT/COLOR CHANGE GUIDE.
1. Paint the vehicle first.
2. Once the paint job is done, head to the JPJ Office.
3. If the vehicle is painted with more than 1 colour, the most or dominant colour is considered the colour of the vehicle.
4. Fill in Form JPJ K8 (amendment of vehicle details) and submit to the JPJ Officer on duty.
5. The officer on duty will update in the MySikap system
6. No fee will be charged.
Many netizen have commented that the process to change your car colour is simple and everyone should follow the right SOP to do so.
So yes, you can change the colour of your car to whatever colour of your liking but just make sure you go through the right steps!
