The pandemic struck in 2020 and the world has been on alert with news on illnesses and viruses, which is why a recent mysterious illness in India is making headlines.

The illness with symptoms ranging from seizures, loss of consciousness, nausea, and dizziness; still has doctors baffled as they are unable to identify the cause of the illness that started in the city of Eluru.

One of the patients, a 21-year-old named Sai, experienced a seizure and fell unconscious before waking up in the hospital hours later feeling weak and tired but since he didn’t experience any illness after, he was sent home two days later.

Andhra Pradesh’s health ministry has ruled out the illness as a viral infection or air and water contamination and the number of cases has declined after 56 patients were admitted to the hospital and one man passed away from it.

10 patients were found to have traces of lead and nickel in their blood samples, and a hypothesis of toxic substances in pesticides in contaminated vegetables is currently being tested.

If proven to be true, this is not the first time India has experienced heavy metal contamination or pesticide poisoning, with over 40 million rural areas’ water contaminated with metals, arsenic and nitrate chemicals - based on a 2019 report; and over 700 farmers hospitalised after being exposed to toxic pesticide three years ago.

Andhra Pradesh is one of the worst states in India that was affected by COVID-19 with over 800,000 total positive cases.

We hope the source can be identified soon and the people of Andhra Pradesh recover from the mysterious illness as soon as possible.
