Nicola Coughlan couldn’t believe the exciting news! The actress received her first solo nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, recognizing her outstanding performance as Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton. While the Bridgerton ensemble earned a nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and received the honor again this year, this is Coughlan's first individual nod.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Coughlan shared her excitement, writing, "This is a very lovely early birthday present! I’m absolutely in shock and so honoured.” She expressed her gratitude to the SAG Awards committee and gave a shoutout to her Bridgerton family.
Along with Coughlan, other nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series include Kathy Bates (Matlock), Allison Janney (The Diplomat), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), and Anna Sawai (Shōgun). Sawai recently won a Golden Globe for her role in Shōgun.
The third season of Bridgerton followed Penelope’s journey as she navigated her relationship with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), rekindled her friendship with Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), and was revealed as Lady Whistledown, a secret identity surprisingly accepted by Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel).
In an interview with PEOPLE, Coughlan described the season as "so romantic," reflecting on the emotional moments shared on set: “There were a lot of moments on set where we filmed something, and we’d turn around and everyone was sort of clutching their chest being like, ‘Oh my God,’” she said.
While rumors of a possible romance between Coughlan and her Bridgerton co-star Newton circulated, Coughlan has been romantically linked to actor Jake Dunn since August 2024. She described her relationship with Newton as a “gorgeous friendship,” emphasizing their deep connection. “We have such a love for one another and this experience that I’ll never have with someone else again,” she told TIME.
Season 4 of Bridgerton is officially in the works and will focus on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) as he searches for love in high society London. Coughlan and Jonathan Bailey will return, while newcomers Yerin Ha and Katie Leung join the cast, with Ha playing Benedict’s love interest, Sophie.
Thompson recently teased the upcoming season, saying it will explore “the struggle between a proper old-school fairy tale — the romance of it — and the actual reality of the world.”
