The pandemic might be one of the biggest stories to tell future generations but it’s another story to add to the world’s oldest man’s life story as he celebrates his 112th birthday!

The world’s oldest man, Bob Weighton recently celebrated his 112th birthday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born on 29 March 1908, the world’s oldest man celebrated his birthday chatting with his friends and family over the phone and via video chat in his apartment in Alton, Hampshire.

Bob share’s the same birthday with the world’s oldest woman, Joan Hocquard, who also turned 112 on the same day.

"I don't know Joan but I would like to send her my best wishes for her birthday,” said Bob.

Bob lived through five monarchs, 22 prime ministers, two World Wars, the Spanish flu and smallpox among many, many other events and has three children, 10 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren!

He became the world’s oldest man after Chitetsu Watanbe from Japan who previously held the title passed away.

“I just accept it as a fact. It’s not something I ever intended, wanted or worked for but it’s just one of those facts of life. You might find it amazing but it’s just one of those things,” Bob commented on his age.

“I have not lived my life avoiding being run over by buses or getting cancer or anything else. I’ve done nothing to deserve or achieve this age. I’m just one of the lucky ones.”

We hope Bob and Joan will both live long enough for another birthday and we also hope that people can stay at home to avoid spreading COVID-19 to high risk groups like them!
