Yes, chili makes us teary sometimes but this Penang born chili entrepreneur made even the toughest investors cry, not because of his chili… but his story!
BBC Dragon’s Den, a show where five multi-millionaires review entrepreneurs’ pitches of their business or ideas and decide whether they want to invest in what they have. And William Chew is one of the latest to pitch his chili paste business.
William’s company named Mak Tok, got the investors’ attention with him starting off by explaining his business by singing and playing a guitar and eventually bringing the judges to tears.
He explained that he loved the recipe that was made by his mom growing up and decided to open a chili paste business called Mak Tok with his cousin.
“I started my business because of my mum and she’s always been behind me all the way and without her support and everyone else that’s behind me, I wouldn’t be here today talking to you guys.”
While his business pitch got turned down by four of the investors, one of the “Dragons”, Sarah Davies was so touched by his story that she invested RM256,535 ($61,000) in the business!
Sarah, the judge also received an investment from a previous investor on the show which started her own business that’s now making $41million!
“It’s you, that’s what I’ve invested in. It’s you!” Sarah said to Will.
What an inspiring story! We hope that the humble Will can one day make his Mak Tok chili paste well-known across the world!
