Birds have been a messenger for centuries and relied on to deliver messages from one to another. But could they be spies?
Well the residents of Manyari village in the Hiranagar sector certainly thinks so after one pigeon was “arrested” for the suspicion of being a spy for Pakistan along the border in Kashmir.
The police captured the bird after a local named Geeta Devi saw the pigeon that was painted pink and raised the suspicion after seeing a ring around its foot with numbers on it.
“We don’t know from where it came. Locals captured it near our fences. We have found a ring in its foot on which some numbers are written. Further investigation is underway,” said Kathua Police’s senior superintendent Shailendra Mishra.
And while the bird is being “investigated”, one Pakistani villager that claims to be the bird owner revealed the truth behind the “suspicious” bird.
The man named Habibullah lives 4km from the border said that he flew his pigeons to celebrate Eid festival and that the pigeon was a “symbol of peace” love and tolerance”.
He also said that the code is actually his mobile phone number that he had inscribed on the rings before letting them fly off and that India should “refrain from victimising innocent birds”.
Habibullah is now urging Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to return his pigeon and ask that the authorities abide by “full protocol and due respect”.
This is not the first time pigeons have been “arrested” in India, with several being “taken into custody” on suspicions on being a spy.
The pigeon has yet to comment on its innocence.
