Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. He died peacefully at 7:35 a.m. in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, formally announced the death:
"With deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis… His life was devoted to serving the Lord and the Church, especially the poor and marginalized. We now commend his soul to God's infinite mercy."
Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, confirmed that the Pope’s body will be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23, where the faithful may pay their respects. Plans for the funeral and public viewing will be finalized after the first General Congregation of Cardinals on Tuesday.
On Monday evening, a short ceremony was held to certify the Pope’s death and place his body in the coffin. The ritual took place in the Casa Santa Marta chapel and was overseen by Cardinal Farrell. Seals were placed on the papal apartments both in the Apostolic Palace and the Casa Santa Marta.
Pope Francis had been battling respiratory illness since mid-February, when he was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital with bronchitis. His condition worsened with a diagnosis of bilateral pneumonia, and after 38 days of hospitalization, he returned home to recover.
The late Pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had long struggled with respiratory issues. He underwent lung surgery in his youth and canceled several engagements in recent years due to related illnesses.
