Pokémon fans have been naming their pets after their favourite Pokémon for years but this professor took it to the next level!

Three new beetles have been discovered in Australia and one professor decided to name them after three legendary OG Pokémon.

The three newly-discovered beetles were named after fan-favourite legendary birds Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos after Dr. Darren Pollock and Ph.D. student Yun Hsiao collaborated to document the beetles.

The duo decided to go with the three famous Pokémon names because of how rare the beetles are, similar to how rare the legendary Pokémon were in-game.

While the beetles don’t actually look like the counterparts they were named after, they are however differentiated by their colour variation.

The three beetles named Binburrum articuno, Binburrum zapdos, and Binburrum moltres can be identified with distinctive features like silvery brown colouring across the body and wings, golden and black two-tone top and bottom, and black wings and golden prothorax respectively.

"Yun says that he was an aspiring Pokémon trainer when he was young, and so, because of the rarity of the specimens of the three new species, he suggested that we name them after the three Legendary bird Pokémon," Pollock explained.

"I thought that this was a great idea, and so, the new species which were unveiled to the world in 2020 are Binburrum articuno, Binburrum moltres, and Binburrum zapdos."

The beetles will appear in the upcoming third edition of "Australian Beetles” and was noted by Dr. Darren on the importance to name the species using never-been-used-before names to tell the species apart.

The news came just in time for Pokémon’s 25th anniversary celebration that is expected to last till the end of 2021 with the company releasing announcements on their new games and more!

What are your thoughts on the beetles being named after the legendary birds? Let us know your favourite legendary Pokémon!
