The Fish Tales Bar & Grill in Ocean City, Maryland, U.S., has introduced a new and fun way to keep their customers safe while practicing social distancing.
Their method? Bumper tables. These tables are surrounded by large inner tubes that help to keep diners from getting too close to each other. The tables been likened to bumper cars, hence the term “bumper tables”.
The custom-built tables are made on wheels so customers can walk about in the restaurant’s parking lot and mingle while enjoying food and drinks, but bumping into each however, is not recommended as the likelihood of spilling the food items is high.
Speaking to CNN, owners Shawn and Donna Harman of the popular waterfront restaurant noted that the bumper tables will be used for customers who are waiting for tables.
“I mean, it’s a novelty, it’s cool,” said Shawn. “It’s a great photo opportunity for them.”
The custom-built table will also make it easier for the restaurant’s staff to enforce social distancing.
“If you put the two tables together, you can’t get within 6 feet of each other – and it’s fun,” Donna added.

Revolution Event and Design and Production – who built the tables, is run by Donna’s cousin and according to her, they’ve been talking about the idea for a couple of weeks when she decided to order 10 tables for the restaurant.
For now, outdoor dining is still not allowed so the Harmans aren’t sure when they’ll be able to start using the tables. After delaying its season opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fish Tales has only recently started offering takeout service.
This is definitely fun idea that we could get on board with!
