The world under the sea is a little bit bluer today as news that actor Samuel E. Wright who voiced Sebastian the crab in The Little Mermaid, has passed away at the age of 74.

The late actor’s daughter confirmed the sad news to The Hollywood Reporter sharing that her father had passed away peacefully in his home after being diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago.
“He was the brightest light,” she noted.

News of the 74-year-old actor’s passing was announced on a Facebook post by his hometown of Montgomery, New York, USA, which said:
“Today, the Town of Montgomery mourns the loss of Sam Wright. Pictured here with Town Supervisor Brian Maher and his brother Patrick in Walden in the early 1990’s. Sam was an inspiration to us all and along with his family established the Hudson Valley Conservatory.
Sam and his family have impacted countless Hudson Valley youth always inspiring them to reach higher and dig deeper to become the best version of themselves.
On top of his passion for the arts and his love for his family, Sam was most known for walking into a room and simply providing PURE JOY to those he interacted with. He loved to entertain, he loved to make people smile and laugh and he loved to love.”
Samuel was best known for his iconic role as Sebastian, Ariel’s trusty sidekick and voice of reason throughout 1989’s The Little Mermaid.
We know we’ll never forget his performance of “Under the Sea” which helped earned the movie an Oscar for Best Original Song.

The late actor was also known for his roles as Mufasa in the Broadway musical The Lion King, Kron from Dinosaur, and much more.
