It was recently reported that Scarface, the oldest lion at the Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya, has passed away at the age of 14, from natural causes.
Lions typically live for up to 10 to 14 years, and sadly; it was the majestic creature’s time to go.
Scarface was much loved and particularly distinctive within his pride due to the prominent scar that cut straight across his right eye.
People all over the world were very interested in learning more about the magnificent lion and many followed his official Facebook page for updates or looked out for him eagerly during the many tour reserves.
A celebrity in the animal kingdom, Scarface also featured in countless documentaries, including the BBC’s Big Cat Diary.

The Mara Predator Conservation Programme took to Facebook to announce the sad news of Scarface’s passing saying:
“At 1pm local time [Friday, June 11], Scarface took his last breath. He died in peace without any disturbance from vehicles and hyenas. We were the only vehicle on the scene and by his side, hoping to give him any kind of comfort.
The Mara has lost yet another one of its great iconic males. May his legend forever live on.”
During his lifetime, Scarface was a formidable leader who presided over a 400 square-mile territory. Sadly, in the period before his death, he had become underweight and sickly.
The ferocious lion had been part of a pride known as ‘the four musketeers” and dominated the Malaika and Ashnil camp territories alongside his brothers, Sikio and Morani.
Their other brother, Hunter, had passed away three years ago.
