Students in Malaysia have been studying from home since the pandemic hit the nation and have only recently started going back to school. And parents are now asking to cancel school holidays.

The Malaysian Parents' Consensus (MIMBAR) is suggesting that all term holidays this year be abolished.

Datin Seri Ismalina Ismail, the president of MIMBAR said that this is to give students a chance to catch up with the lessons that they are falling behind on.

“cancel school holidays”: parents want students to “catch up”

“Most of the parents I met said that this year’s term holiday is less significant because they have been at home for too long,” she said.

"They are falling behind a lot, so parents are asking me to consider abolishing the term school holidays," she told Astro AWANI.

Apart from that, she also hopes that boarding schools would implement strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), especially for visitors who want to enter the school area.

“We hope that the monitoring of this SOP can be carried out in an orderly and effective manner so that when the children return to the hostel, they will not be infected.”

"Visitors or outsiders who enter the school area should be checked first according to the SOP implemented because we do not want outsiders who enter the school area to carry the virus and cause a new cluster," she added.

Many netizens are having mixed reactions over the suggestion, with some agreeing with the suggestion while others thinking that teachers won’t be getting the much-needed break without the school holidays.

Some also joked that parents are only suggesting this because they are lazy to take care of their children at home.
