The man and the legend who brought life to our favourite characters on Sesame Street like Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, has passed away at the age of 85.

Caroll Spinney had been with Sesame Street since it first started in 1969 and brought life to both Big Bird and Oscar for five decades.

Sesame Street creator, Jim Henson credited Caroll as being one of the people who shaped and defined the series.

The legendary puppeteer passed away at his home in Connecticut, USA, after having lived for some time with the movement disorder dystonia – which causes uncontrollable muscle contractions.

Before Caroll retired from Sesame Street last year, he hand-picked his successors to continue to bring Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to life.

"Caroll was an artistic genius whose kind and loving view of the world helped shape and define Sesame Street from its earliest days in 1969 through five decades," said Sesame Workshop in a statement.

"His enormous talent and outsized heart were perfectly suited to playing the larger-than-life yellow bird who brought joy to generations of children and countless fans of all ages around the world, and his lovably cantankerous grouch gave us all permission to be cranky once in a while."

Caroll will forever be missed. RIP.
