Taking the perfect selfie might be important but many have lost their lives just to get their “perfect shot”, and a new incident has taken another seven lives because of a selfie.

A boat in Indonesia reportedly overturned after the tourists on it attempted to take a selfie and moved to one end of the boat, causing the death of at least seven passengers.

Central Java police chief Ahmad Lutfi said that the reason behind the tragic accident was overcapacity saying, “20 people took a selfie on the right side then the boat lost balance and flipped.”

Seven have been found dead and rescuers are searching for two more missing people after the police managed to rescue 11 of the passengers.

One survivor reportedly lost his wife and two children aged four and seven in the accident, with the youngest still yet to be found.

The boat was reported to have been helmed by a 13-year-old and authorities are looking into whether there was negligence by those managing the boat rides at the reservoir.

Measured at 1.5m wide and 6.5m long, the boat had a capacity of 14, but was carrying 20 people at the time it overturned.

“They do not comply with [health and safety protocols] and violate the specified visitor capacity”, Mr Lufti said and added that the tourism sites within the Kedung Ombo Reservoir have been ordered to closed.

This is not the first time the lack of safety standards has caused tragic accidents in Indonesia, with another previous accident in West Java involving two boats that collided and resulted in three deaths and 13 missing when the search ended.

Many netizens were shocked over another tragedy due to a selfie with many saying the passengers should’ve known not to all sit on one side of the boat.

May the victims of the tragic accident rest in peace.

Do you know someone that would go the extra mile to take the perfect selfie? Make sure you don’t risk your life for a photo!
