- Disappearance of Brianna Maitland
In March 2004, 17-year-old Vermont waitress Brianna Maitland finished work for the day and drove home. That was the last time anyone saw her. Brianna's car was discovered the next day backed into an abandoned house, with the boot of the car inside the property. Police removed the car, but didn't try to trace the driver. By the time they did, the leads had gone cold. To this day, no one knows who took her, or why.
- The Hands Resist Him
This creepy painting shows a young boy standing beside a weird doll, with hands pressed against the glass behind him. It was painted by an artist called Bill Stoneham in 1972, and is allegedly haunted. It was put up for sale on eBay with a note that said the owner was afraid of it because the doll seemed to move, and the listing was accompanied by photographs that showed the doll in various threatening poses.
- Idilia Dubb
Idilia Dubb was a Scottish teenager who became trapped in Lahneck Castle while on holiday in Germany in the 1800s, after an old staircase she had climbed collapsed behind her. She wasn't found at the time, but eventually her diary and bones were discovered. The diary documents her starvation and failed attempts to signal for help.
- Mellified Man
"Mellified man" was a form of ancient Chinese medicine made by submerging a whole dead body in honey. The process would begin while the victims were still alive—they ate nothing but honey in the run-up to their death, and would bathe in it. Once the corpses were fully dissolved in honey, the ‘syrup’ would then be used to cure various ailments. Errr, we'll just stick to regular cough syrup, thanks.
- The Murder of Junko Furuta
This appalling case of a 17-year-old Japanese student who was kidnapped and then murdered by her classmates is made all the more creepy because the parents of one of the perpetrators knew that Junko was being kept in their home. She pleaded with them for help but they were apparently "too scared" of their son to intervene. Her body was eventually discovered in a concrete-filled oil drum.
- Order Of Nine Angles
The ONA is a secretive, occult Satanic organisation based in the UK, with links to fascism and neo-Nazi groups. Their goal is to combat Christianity in order to establish a militaristic new social order, which they call the "Imperium". They also condone human sacrifice, referring to their victims as "opfers". They've also written several guides to human sacrifice, or "culling", as they call it.
- The Georgia Guidestones
These huge stones were commissioned by a mysterious group of "loyal Americans" and are inscribed with a weird message that says: "Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature. Guide reproduction wisely. Be not a cancer on the earth. Unite humanity with a new language." Some people believe the message on the stones to be a Satanic creed and the "10 Commandments of the Antichrist".
- Ed Gein
Ed Gein, also known as the Butcher of Plainfield, was an American serial killer who would make furniture and other items out of his victims' bodies. When he was finally apprehended and the police searched his home, they found a corset made from a female torso, a belt made from nipples, and a lampshade made of human skin, amongst many other things. The one above is a replica item you can buy on Etsy. Why?!
- The “From Hell” Letter
Prolific Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper sent several letters taunting law enforcement officials. This one is probably the creepiest, not least because it was accompanied by half a human kidney. It reads: "From hell, mr Lusk, I send you half the Kidne I took from one woman I fried and ate it was very nise. I may send you the bloody knif that took it out if you only wate a whil longer. Catch me when you can Mishter Lusk."
- Miroslav Filipovic
Miroslav Filipović was a World War II Nazi collaborator from Croatia, who was nicknamed "The Devil of Jasenovac" because of his extreme savagery towards the inmates of the Jasenovac concentration camp. He would throw infants into the air and try to impale them on his dagger. He had trained as a Franciscan monk before the war and would often wear his robes while carrying out the killings.
- The Beaumont Children Disappearance
These three children were aged 9, 7, and 4 when they went missing from an Adelaide beach in 1966. The case shocked Australia, as up to that point it had been considered safe to let kids play (and take buses) unsupervised. They were last seen in the company of a blonde man and were never found, although there were some sightings, and even a letter claiming to be from one of the children living in captivity.
- UVB-76
A numbers station is a clandestine radio broadcast that no one can really explain, but which could potentially be a military or spy communication. UVB-76 is said to be the creepiest of all. Since 1982, the station has broadcasted a repeating buzzing noise, broken up every few years by a voice that reads a list of Russian numbers and names. The station has become more active in recent years, and some people think it might be a nuclear failsafe set up by Russia.
- Lithopedion
"Lithopedion" literally means "stone baby", and it's a very creepy and thankfully rare phenomenon where a fetus doesn't develop and the mother isn't aware she's pregnant—and so it calcifies and essentially turns to stone inside her. They can remain undiagnosed for decades, and sometimes are only discovered after death. Grim.
- Mr Cruel
This balaclava is a mock-up of the one owned by "Mr Cruel", a rapist, murderer, and pedophile responsible for several attacks in and around Melbourne in the '80s and '90s. He would shackle victims to the bed with a crude neck brace, and he's thought to have videotaped some of his attacks. He was never caught, and it's believed he still has the taped footage, as short, creepy clips have appeared online.
- Edward Mordrake
This quite literally two-faced man was allegedly born in the 19th century in England and had an extra face on the back of his head, that according to legend would "sneer while Mordrake was happy" and "smile while he was weeping". It's said Mordrake begged doctors to have his "demon face" removed, claiming that it whispered things that "one would only speak about in hell" at night. Argh.
- The Deaths Of Kris Kremers And Lisanne Froon
Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon were two Dutch women who went missing on a hike in Panama. A backpack containing their phones and a camera was found 10 weeks later. The first few photos were ordinary holiday shots taken at the beginning of their hike. The final 90 were taken a week later in a pitch-dark forest, and showed strange items. Their remains (including bleached bones) were finally found almost a year after they first went missing.
