If you’re among those who hate the smell of cigarette smoke when you’re eating at an open restaurant (or wherever you are), well, good news for you!

Starting December this year, all open-air restaurants will prohibit smokers to light up their cigarettes and will be labeled as non-smoking areas, The Health Ministry announced.

“This gazettement is Malaysia’s commitment as a member state to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and adheres to the guidelines under Article 8 of the World Health Organisation (WHO).”

Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye said that it’s the ministry’s initiative to “protect the public from the dangers of cigarette smoke” and that offenders could face a fine up to RM10,000 or jailed up to two years!

There are currently 23 designated smoke-free areas that include entertainment centres, theatres, elevators, public toilets, and air-conditioned eateries.

So, be ready to say bye bye to the smell of cigarettes when you’re eating at open restaurants!
