Any Malaysian would know the Speedy video stores that have been selling international movies and dramas for over 30 years… and now unfortunately, the franchise will be closing all its stores in Malaysia.
After over three decades, the company announced on Facebook that they will be closing down all Speedy stores nationwide permanently.
“Dear customers, our company are sadly to announce that we are going to close down all of our outlets soon,” the post reads. “Thank you for your support during all these year.”
The company announced that all 14 remaining stores in Malaysia will be having closing down sales for customers to enjoy their final offers.
Speedy Video Distributors Sdn Bhd was established back in 1989 and gained popularity in Malaysia for selling home releases of movies and TV series from Hollywood, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and more, on CDs, DVDs and BluRay.
But with the rise of streaming platforms and high speed internet's availability across the nation, more people are watching on their computers instead without having to buy copies of the movies and dramas from video stores.
The COVID-19 pandemic probably affected the company during the Movement Control Order period too, with stores being closed down to prevent the spread of the virus.
Many Malaysian netizens are saying goodbye to the company that has been providing home entertainment for years, with many sharing their memories of standing outside the shop and watching the movies and dramas playing on their TVs.
Thank you Speedy for giving Malaysians years of entertainment! Tell us your favourite memory of the video store!
