If there’s one thing most Malaysians have in common it would be our love for spicy food! But all the yummy curry, sambal and tom yum might not be so good for your brain!
A study from the University of South Australia and Qatar University showed that people who eat spicy food every day have a higher risk of getting dementia.
Researchers found that the chances of getting dementia for people who ate more than 50g of chili a day doubles compared to people who don’t!
“Chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure in our previous studies. However, in this study, we found adverse effects on cognition among older adults.”
While eating both fresh and dried chili peppers speeds up your metabolism and fat loss, it also leads to memory decline and poor cognition.
The effect of memory loss is worse for people that are slim, based on the analytics from 4,582 adults over 55 that was studied over the span of 15 years.
So if you can’t survive without eating spicy food for a day, maybe it’s time to slow down a little. Especially if you have a job that requires you to memorize things or if you’re sitting for an exam!
Do you know someone that loves eating spicy food? Let them know!
