History was made recently when veteran actor O Yeong-su became the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe. That’s a huge achievement!

The 77-year-old actor won the Best Supporting Actor Award for his role as Oh Il Nam in the mega-hit series Squid Game.

The actor had been nominated alongside Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass in The Morning Show, Kieran Culkin in Succession, and Brett Goldstein in Ted Lasso, but ultimately won the award.

Yeong-su is also known as Player 001 in Squid Game, an elderly participant in the deadly game who has a brain tumor. He was later revealed to be the mastermind behind the games.

“I feel like I’m floating on air,” the actor  said on a Korean TV broadcast. “It makes me think, ‘I need to calm down, organise my thoughts, and hold myself back right now.”

“So many people have been contacting me, and because I don’t have a manager to help me, it’s hard for me to handle the volume of calls and messages I’ve been receiving, so my daughter has been helping me.” he added.

Golden Globes announced the win on their official Twitter page.

Shortly after Yeong-su’s historic win, actor Lee Byung Hun took to his personal Instagram to share a heartfelt message to his Squid Game co-star.

Byung Hun shared a photo of the 77-year-old Golden Globe winner alongside the Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk while on the set of the series.

The veteran actor was born in 1944 and is well-known as one of South Korea’s greatest stage actors, having appeared in more than 200 theatre productions.

As a result of his role in Squid Game recently, Yeong-su has become the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe Award.

His achievement follows another actor and South Korean origin, Sandra Oh, with her historic win back in 2019. She was the first Asian American actress to receive, not one, but TWO Golden Globes!

Squid Game, released in September 2021, was also nominated in the Best Television Drama Series category, with the show’s lead Lee Jung-Jae also scoring a Best Actor nomination. However, he lost out to Succession’s Jeremy Strong.

Congratulations O Yeong-su for the big win! What an achievement.
