Choc Or Chips? Your Sweet-Savoury Preference Is Apparently Decided By Your DNA

It says something about your current emotional state too.

You’ve just had dinner but are getting them cravings again. When this happens, what do you usually reach for: chocolate, potato chips, cookies, instant noodles? Is it something sweet or savoury?

As it turns out, the choice that you make isn’t always a spur-of-the-moment decision—it’s influenced by many factors in your life. It’s the same reason why some of us live for cake and ice cream, and some just don’t get it.

You are what your momma ate

While you were a tiny foetus in your mother’s womb, everything that she ate helped shape your taste in food. You were, after all, getting your ‘food’ from her. It was the same when she was breastfeeding you too. So, if your mum had sugar cravings while she was pregnant with you, chances are, you like the sugary goodness too!

Of course, as you grow up and are introduced to a greater variety of food, your taste preferences may gradually change. The more you eat something, the more you’ll end up liking it—funny how this doesn’t quite work for vegetables though. 🤣

The decision is in your DNA

Science says that your preference for sweet or salty also depends on your DNA. In fact, 75% of your preference for sweetness is determined by your family genes.

Ironically, sweet toothers are likely to have a low sensitivity to sweetness. Dubbed the “nontasters”, they only have one-third as many taste buds as “supertasters”—we’ll get to that in a bit, which means they crave more sugar to get the same level of satisfaction.

Meanwhile, taste—including bitterness and spiciness—is generally stronger for the “supertasters” aka Team Savoury. This is why they usually go for salty food because salt can tone down the overpowering flavours they dislike.

Your feelings matter

We all know that chocolates and sugar help our body create serotonin—the happiness hormone, making it a popular feel-better treat for when we’re feeling sad.

Our cravings for something sweet can also be linked to gratitude. Being grateful for something is often a ‘sweet’ thing that you feel after receiving an act of kindness from others. As such, it seemingly makes you want to eat sweet food too!
