Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the ring—literally—for her latest role, portraying legendary boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. The Euphoria star revealed she underwent a dramatic physical transformation for the part, gaining muscle and outgrowing all her clothes in the process.

“My body was completely different,” Sweeney told W magazine. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27.....It was crazy!”
To prepare for the role, Sweeney trained intensely for over three months. Her daily routine included morning and evening weight training, plus two hours of midday kickboxing. “I was so strong—like crazy strong,” she said, adding, “I loved it.”

Though the physical transformation empowered her, Sweeney also faced harsh public criticism about her appearance, with some calling her “frumpy” or claiming she had a “horrible body.” In response, she posted training videos that showed her boxing skills and physical strength.
The film also explores Christy Martin’s personal life, including surviving a violent attack by her then-husband and coach, Jim Martin, in 2010. He was later convicted of attempted second-degree murder.
Despite the challenges, Sweeney says she’s proud of her work: “I’m proud of the transformation and the work I’ve poured into it.” For her, this role isn’t just about playing a fighter—it’s about embodying one.
