Sydney Sweeney is back as Cassie in Euphoria season 3, and she’s warning fans to brace for an even wilder ride. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Sweeney teased that things are about to get “unhinged” for her character in the upcoming season, which she’s currently filming.

“I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear,” Sweeney said. “She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love.” She added that Cassie’s love might not always be healthy: “It could be a sad version of love, as well. It’s so much fun to play a character that is as crazy as she is.”
Sweeney credited series creator Sam Levinson with encouraging her to embrace Cassie’s chaos even more this season. “I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go crazier.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m all in.’ And this season is unhinged,” she said, confirming with a laugh when the interviewer asked, “More unhinged?”

Fans of the show have watched Cassie navigate intense challenges, including an abortion and a messy affair with her best friend’s abusive boyfriend—plus that now-iconic Oklahoma bathroom breakdown. In season 3, the show will take a time jump as its main characters move beyond high school.
Since Euphoria’s 2019 debut, Sweeney has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents. She’s starred in the rom-com Anyone But You, produced and headlined the horror film Immaculate, and is preparing to play Kim Novak in an upcoming biopic. Still, she says Cassie is a role that’s had a huge impact on her life. “It definitely changed my life,” she said. “I think people have a hard time separating actors from their characters, especially with someone like Cassie, where she’s hated and loved. But if they’re hating me for decisions my character is making, then I’m playing the character correctly.”
